MINUTES
NOVEMBER 27, 2018
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
The Public Art Committee regular meeting was called to order at 11:10 a.m. in the Linda Callon
Conference Room at City Hall at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Mayor Mary-Lynne Bernald, Council Member Emily Lo
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: James Lindsay, City Manager
Crystal Bothelio, Deputy City Manager
REPORT ON POSTING OF THE AGENDA
Deputy City Manager Crystal Bothelio reported that the agenda for this meeting was properly
posted on November 21, 2018.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ON NON-AGENDIZED ITEMS
Steve and Sarah with the South Bay Musical Theater introduced themselves.
AGENDA ITEMS:
1. Public Art Committee Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the Public Art Committee minutes from October 22, 2018.
LO/BERNALD MOVED TO APPROVE THE PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE MINUTES
FROM OCTOBER 22, 2018. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BERNALD, LO. NOES: NONE.
ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
2. Wall Mural
Recommended Action:
Receive updates on wall mural artwork gift from Peter Mester and Pavel Mester via Cal Arte
Music Foundation; and, make a recommendation to the City Council on acceptance of the
artwork.
The Committee discussed the mural and the prospective location of the artwork.
BERNALD/LO MOVED TO RECOMMEND ACCEPTANCE OF THE ARTWORK
FROM PETER MESTER AND PAVEL MESTER VIA CAL ARTE MUSIC
FOUNDATION, WITH THE ARTWORK TO BE INITIALLY DISPLAYED IN THE
JOAN PISANI COMMUNITY CENTER WITH THE POTENTIAL TO BE

RELOCATED TO ANOTHER SPACE AFTER THE FIRST YEAR. MOTION
PASSED. AYES: BERNALD, LO. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
3. Public Art Brand
Recommended Action:
Review and provide feedback on Public Art logo and brand.
The Committee reviewed the draft Public Art logo.
LO/BERNALD MOVED TO ACCEPT THE LOGO WITH A CHANGE TO MAKE
THE FONT USED IN THE LOGO CONSISTENT WITH THE CITY SEAL AND TO
MAKE THE WORDS “PUBLIC ART” BOLDER. MOTION PASSED. AYES:
BERNALD, LO. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
4. Mosaic Community Art
Recommended Action:
Consider whether to include Mosaic Community Art in the list of Public Art priorities for
Fiscal Year 2018/19.
The Committee discussed whether to include a mosaic community art project in the priorities
for Fiscal Year 2018/19. The Committee agreed to place an item on the January 2019 Public
Art Committee agenda to consider whether to request an increase in the Committee’s budget
for Fiscal Year 19/20 to accommodate a mosaic community art project.
5. Future Meetings
Recommended Action:
Discuss agenda topics and scheduling of future meetings.
Mayor Bernald requested discussion of community outreach on public art at the next
meeting.
