HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 20-044 on solidarity with the Black CommunityRESOLUTION NO.20-044 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA AFFIRMING THE CITY'S COMMITMENT TO STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE BLACK COMMNUNITY WHEREAS, people throughout the United States and across the world are mourning the senseless loss of Black lives and calling for an end to racism, systematic injustices, and violence against the Black community; and WHEREAS, hundreds of Saratoga residents gathered at Saratoga City Hall on June 6, 2020 to express their dismay over the death, injustice, and suffering caused by racism and to seek an end to inequality and discrimination; and WHEREAS, equity and justice are a priority of the City Council and the Saratoga community; and WHEREAS, the City of Saratoga recognizes the extraordinary efforts of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office to keep the community safe and protect all members of the public, no matter their race, ethnicity, creed, or background; and WHEREAS, the City Council has no tolerance for discrimination, police violence, or prejudice, the City Council recognizes that no community is immune to injustice, more can and must be done to end systematic racism, and communities across the nation must stand with the Black community to make lasting and significant change. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saratoga does hereby affirm its commitment to stand in solidarity with the Black community, condemns violence against the Black community, and encourages the Saratoga community to engage in peaceful discourse to find a path forward and enact meaningful change. The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Saratoga City Council held on the 171h day of June 2020 by the following vote: AYES: Mayor Howard A.
