MINUTES
FEBRUARY 4, 2020
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
The Public Art Committee was called to order 4:07 p.m. at Saratoga City Hall, Linda
Callon Conference Room at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue.

PRESENT: Council Members Mary-Lynne Bernald, Yan Zhao
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: Crystal Bothelio, Assistant City Manager
Kayla Nakamoto, Community Engagement Coordinator
Youth Commissioners Alex Zhai, Nivi Madhan, and

1. Public Art Committee Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the Public Art Committee minutes from November 20, 2019.
ZHAO/BERNALD MOVED TO APPROVE THE PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE MINUTES
FROM NOVEMBER 20, 2019. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BERNALD, ZHAO. NOES:
NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
2. 2020 Paint the City: Utility Box Painting Project Applications
Recommended Action:
Review Paint the City applications and select up to 3 conceptual designs at each
location.
Community Engagement Coordinator Kayla Nakamoto presented a report on the
2020 Paint the City: Utility Box Painting Project applications.

The Public Art Committee reviewed the applications and selected 3 conceptual
designs for each utility box location. Their selections included:

3. Public Art Budget
Recommended Action:
Receive status update on the Fiscal Year 2019/20 Public Art budget, as well as any
recommended changes to the Public Art budget for Fiscal Year 2020/21.
The Committee discussed potential expenses in the 2020/21 Fiscal Year and
agreed to remove the interactive mural and Paint the City. The Committee asked
staff to include potential Fiscal Year 2020/21 expenses on the next meeting
agenda.
4. Future Public Art Project
Recommended Action:

Consider options for a future public art project, such as a sculpture program, an
interactive wall mural, or shadow art; and, provide direction to staff.
During discussion on the Public Art Budget, the Committee agreed to remove an
interactive wall mural from possible Fiscal Year 2020/21 expenses. The
Committee agreed to reschedule discussion of a future public project for the next
meeting.
5. Summer Public Art Event
Recommended Action:
Consider options for a summer public art event, such as a chalk art event, hosting
rock painting at an existing event, or collaborating with the Youth Commission on
ArtExtravaganza; and, provide direction to staff.
Community Engagement Coordinator Kayla Nakamoto introduced the item.
Youth Commissioners Alex Zhai, Nivi Madhan, and Michelle Liu shared
information about ArtsExtravaganza.
The Committee and Youth Commissioners discussed the details for
ArtsExtravaganza. The Committee agreed to host a #SaratogaROCKS table at the
event and offered to provide the Youth Commission with introductions to several
local artists.
The Committee discussed hosting a #SaratogaROCKS table at one of the summer
movie nights and agreed to host a table at the July event.
6. Public Art Survey
Recommended Action:
Discuss the public art survey with Public Information Officer Lauren Pettipiece.
The Committee agreed to reschedule discussion of the public art survey for the
next meeting.
7. Updates on Existing Projects
Recommended Action:
Receive updates on the Rainy Day Sidewalk Poetry and Nuts about Saratoga
programs.

The Committee agreed to reschedule updates on existing projects for the next
meeting.
8. Future Meetings
Recommended Action:
Discuss agenda topics and scheduling of future meetings.
The Committee agreed to meet on February 27, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. and requested
the following agenda items:
- Public Art Survey
- Updates on Existing Projects
- Future Public Art Project
- Public Art Budget
