I assume you would not delay our Ravenwood agenda item. Can you let us know if the committee has any other safety measures to look at? Maybe they will approve speed humps? I attached a spreadsheet that has our neighbors names and the responses from a little over half. Maybe you can just tell the committee that 50% plus people are OK with speed humps with most OK with speed humps and signs placed at property lines. Also, the key to the data is the following (and is in the spreadsheet): 1 = Yes; 0 = No; blank = no response yet Thanks Daryl From: Emma Burkhalter <eburkhalter@saratoga.ca.us> Sent: Thursday, May 4, 2023 6:33 PM To: Emma Burkhalter <eburkhalter@saratoga.ca.us> Subject: [EXT] Traffic Safety Commission Meeting 05/11/2023 External Email Dear Saratoga Community Members, Attached is the agenda for the May 11, 2023 Traffic Safety Commission (TSC) Meeting. Exercise caution when opening attachments or clicking links, especially from unknown senders. Hi, I have been referred to you by my neighbor, Daryl Hoot, who has been speaking for the neighbors on Ravenwood Dr, our street, regarding the solutions to speeding of Marshall Lane parents from Quito to Marshall lane in the AMs and PMs and the safety of those families and children who both live on the street and walk to school daily. I, my husband and daughter have lived on Ravenwood Dr for 22 years. I have seen some speeding and mostly not. We live at - 3 houses from the Quito corner, where cars might start to speed up after turning the corner. As it can be problem, we do feel that the wide majority of school families do NOT speed, so there is SOME, but not a lot of speeding, as the city has found. In today's sensitive world, we do understand the fear of something like what occurred not far away in SJ a few years back (last year?) happening wherein a child's death is due to a speeding car. We do understand Saratoga's preference to not install speed bumps, as much as that might help. What we do not understand is the thought that striping the road on both sides will be a solution. It is our feeling that this will be a more dangerous proposal than leaving the street as it is. Please consider NOT striping the street. Striping the street will produce 3 results: 1. The street will appear to be a busy street that handles a lot of traffic at all times and will provide the drivers a feeling of moving at a quick pace - the opposite of what is intended. 2. The striping will provide the drivers a feeling of 'safe haven' to drive at a pace that is still unsafe, however also leaving them with the feeling that pedestrians are now safe from their speeding as they should be within the sides of the street opposite the striped lines. 3. The pedestrians most at risk = very young children who do not understand the limits of the "implied" flat barrier will not be protected truly from the cars on the street. The stripe is s psychological 'barrier' at most and young children's impulses do not factor into that - it is simply unsafe and not a smart choice. Please consider these points. We had a young daughter at one time and would not consider the striping a safe solution. We would worry more if she were told that a stripe would save her. Please. Please consider the smartest choice. Thank you, Brenda and Rob Stribling 1 = Yes; 0 = No; blank = no response yet Speed humps OK?Speed humps OK? Option A (March 2023)Option A (May 2023) Amer Ather and Ayesha Sheikh Debbie Colyar 1 1 1 I cannot have a speedbump by the oak tree, because that plowing to get the speedbump in will disturb the growt and it is a heritage tree, so I have to protect it for the city. Any disturbance isn’t good for the roots of that tree, but if speedbump could be put before the tree or after the tree that would be acceptable. I’m so close to Quito that I doubt there would be a speed bump that close anyway so I think the problem solved. Good luck and thank you for all your work on this project. (2) lots of pedestrians and dog-walkers have to walk in the street since there are no sidewalks for pedestrians and sometimes cars parked next to the curb. Suggestions to address the traffic safety concern: post signs for 15 mph at both ends of De Havilland Dr. I've lived at the intersection of De Havilland Dr. and Shubert since 1985. Page 1 of 2 #553 Marilyn Ln Date Received: November 13, 2022 Street name and cross street(s) where the traffic safety concern is occurring: Marilyn Ln Description of traffic safety concern: Last week, when I was crossing the street from my house to the sidewalk on the other side of Marilyn Lane to drop my kid off at school, I almost got ran over by a car speeding over 50 mph. This is not the first time this has happened, but this time was the closest call. The car was electric, so it was not making noise, and it was flying out of the school so fast, it almost hit us and I caught my kid just in time. It was so scary and way too close. The driver looked shocked as well. She was going too fast and did not look around before speeding out of the school. Suggestions to address the traffic safety concern: There is no sidewalk on my side of Marilyn Lane and crossing the street to get to the sidewalk is a challenge every day. If there were a speed bump, it would be so helpful in getting the cars to slow down and pay attention. If a sidewalk could be added on our side of the street, that would be great as well. We are concerned for our safety and the safety of all the kids and parents who walk on Marilyn Lane. Page 2 of 2 Parents are always in a rush to drop off their kids on time and in a hurry to get to work after they drop off their kids. I get worried every morning and every afternoon because of the rashness of the drivers. Please put speed bumps on Marilyn Lane. It will definitely help save kids from possible accidents. Page 1 of 1 #560 Dorchester Dr at Plymouth Dr Date Received: February 23, 2023 Requesting Resident: Gaura Jha Street name and cross street(s) where the traffic safety concern is occurring: Dorchester Dr at Plymouth Dr Description of traffic safety concern: No streetlights in the residential area almost led to an accident with me and my 11 year old sister. Due to the reason that there is no stop sign between the intersection of Dorchester Rd and Plymouth Dr, my sister and I were taking a walk with my phone's flashlight to our neighbors house because we were locked out, and very suddenly surprised with a high speed car charging toward us. Due to the absence of streetlights, we were inconspicuous to the car, and such a situation could have quickly escalated into a major accident. Suggestions to address the traffic safety concern: Add street lights. Page 1 of 1 #562 Saratoga Ave btwn Cox Ave and Lawrence Expy Date Received: March 20, 2023 Requesting Resident: Vincent Pham Street name and cross street(s) where the traffic safety concern is occurring: Cox Ave & Saratoga Ave, and Laurence Expressway & Saratoga Ave Description of traffic safety concern: Hi Commissioner, my name is Vincent Pham and I have concerns about the speed limit from Cox Ave to Laurence Expwy. Both sides of Saratoga Ave are mostly residences and the current speed limit is 40 MPH; however, most cars drive on this segment with the speed about 50 MPH. For last two years, I myself had 2 incidents: one resulted in total loss, another one resulted with very costly fix. Both incidents happened to my cars parked on my driveway. I also saw multiple car accidents on Saratoga Ave & Bucknall Rd due to left turn. Suggestions to address the traffic safety concern: My suggestions: Either adding one more traffic light at Bucknall Rd & Saratoga Ave or posting more speed limit signs and enforce the speed limit. Please let me know if you need more information.
