Study Session--Library Expansion
The Saratoga Library Commission meeting on July 24 was
a continuation of the study session which began at the
June 19 meeting regarding the requirements for the
Saratoga Community Library expansion.
At the June 19 meeting a matrix was used to outline the
minimum and recommended requirements. The matrix was
used again to determine the shelving and aisle
requirements for the children's collections. It was
determined that the aisles should be 3-1/2 feet wide and
that the bookcases should have five shelves. It was
determined that this recommendation could be reconsidered
(i.e. 3 feet wide aisles) if cutbacks were later needed.
Commissioner Bill Watkins suggested that another
consideration for the collections was to determine the
age distribution of the books. He suggested that if
there is a lot of aging material than some of the extra
space may not be needed. Commissioner Watkins agreed to
meet with Library staff to examine several subject
matters in the collections to determine if outdated
materials are on the shelves.
The next criterion discussed was

expansion plan, Commissioner Lou Martini suggested that
further decisions regarding the criterion for the library
expansion be guided by the Library staff. He suggested
that the Library staff make recommendations for each
criterion and then provide and discuss the reasons for
their recommendations with the Commissioners. The
Commissioners approved this suggestion and asked the
Library staff to prepare their recommendations for the
next meeting.
