Library Commission
January 23, 1991
A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday
evening, January 23, 1991. Following is a summary of the
action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Brenner, Krezek,
Newby, Peacock, Watkins, Wood
Commissioners absent: None
II. Report on Posting of Commission Agenda
The agenda was posted on January 14, 1991.
III. Approval of Minutes
The November 28, 1990, minutes were approved
as submitted.
V. Old Business
A. Discussion of Free-standing Book Drop
A status report on this project was deferred
to the February meeting. Chair David Newby
will meet with County library staff for
discussion of options.
B. Planning of Dedication for Lois Thomas Memorial
Following discussion of response received
from previous Commissioners, it was decided
that the bench should be placed in front of
the building where it may be more useful than
in the garden. Staff will follow up on this.
Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m. was set for
the dedication. Staff will send notification
to donors, also advising them of the changed
location of the memorial bench. An article on
the memorial will be in the March Saratogan.
Commissioner Fran Kresek will ask the Friends
of the Library to provide refreshments.
Additional arrangements will be made at the
February meeting.
VI. New Business
A. Discussion of Items for
Development Conference
The Commission decided

for year-round Sunday hours
2. Expansion of Sunday hours from 4 to 6
3. Expansion of weekday hours
4. Installation of free standing book-drop
5. Improvement/expansion of parking lot
6. Improved landscaping e.g. cactus/rocks

Fund feasibility study for improving
functionality of existing Library building
- pre construction costs leading to
preparation of conceptual plan: surveys,
consultant fees, cost estimates, professional
fees, architect selection, community
awareness campaign
B. Updated Circulation Figures - Vicky Kaleikau
County Library staff
Vicky Kaleikau distributed figures through
December indicating circulation is up by
25% over two years ago. County Librarian
Susan Fuller said this is true countywide as
well. Susan will provide new Sunday
statistics.
C. Book Talk by Vicky Kaleikau
Vicky presented a talk on the book "Dave
Barry turns 40."
VII. Reports
Committees
Library Expansion Requirements
Commissioner Bobbie Peacock reported on
meeting with Commissioner Bill Watkins and
Librarian Dolly Barnes.
Public Awareness Gampaian
Richard Brennan reported that he and Fran
met in December. Prospective new member from
Monte Sereno, Louis Martini, agreed to join
the committee to replace Barbara Wood.
Ot~inion Survey
Bill reported on the survey work done in Los
Altos and Mountain View.

Susan Fuller, County Librarian
Susan distributed registration material for the
March 2 Caltac workshop. Members are to call
Carolyn if they wish to attend. Susan also
reported on 1) recent legislation, 2) the new
integrated system, 3) the orientation scheduled
far 2/28, and 4) the upcoming censorship hearing
on 2/5.
Vicky Kaleikau ~ Community Library

Carolyn King, City Staff Representative
Carolyn reported that the Friends of the Reading
Program had submitted a proposal to receive
CDBG/Human Services grant funds. The Commission
supports this proposal.
