"Do Somerthing" for collecting soda donations for the dance 6. Suggestions for improvement K was suggested that we get out the ping. pong tables again and bye a LOT of ping pong balls because they usually end up destroyed, many attendees cromplained them was nothing to do, but if we get more people in, we can make more money 1. Jennifer Chen's roport Mdrew Sheu of Melrose Place gives money m organizations and people who need espeaally to youth groups, once we get the incorporation done, we'll sound impressive and we can ask for a grant B. Non-Profit Identification Discussion Special guest speakers Mr. Ron Adolphson (Sarah's father) Mr. Dan Mount (Dave's father) They will be giving us advice and answering questions about forming anon-profit organization to support the Youth Commission and Heise funds for teen programming. The commission thanked Mr. Addphson and Mr. Mount for attending the meeting. Once the commission becomes a corporation, it will be just like a person, i.e. it can own Property, receive money, pay taxes, etc. ff incorporated, the cmnmission must pay taxes and write out a budget Only currant youth commissioners and other selected individuals will serve in the organization. To become anon-profit takes many steps because the IRS is often hard tD work with. ft can take four to six months after sending the application in. Any income would be exempt from taxes. Goals may include the rye-opening the Warner Hutton Housn, having it just opening it at night, and getting Music Feet t-shirts. The Pros of the organization plan are obvious, tax-exempt donations, non-profit status, it sounds better, people vwuld be more willing th contribute. The main con would be all the book keeping. The organization v+rould not fall under the Brown Act so minutes would not have th be posted. The commission woudl have to meet separately as the Youth Commission and as the organization. We may get roprosentatives from other town organizations m sit on the board. Another problem may be the commission not being old enough (in age, not maturity) tD run the organization. Adults may have to be the ones to fill out the 9-90 and the other tax forms. Eight hundred dollars would also have to be raised to start the organization. The help from Mr. Mount and Mr. Adolphson is groatiy appreciated because it would take lots of extra time and money ff they were not C. Youth Commission T-shirts 1. Solicitations for donations of screen designs and T-shirts Robin was made chair of this committeeldea. He reported that his mother cannot make a donation because her business isn't really big yet so she can't afford to. D. Togapalooza -David Breitenbach Sean is also helping in this item 1. Date Set k was set for this Saturday, unfortunately, there is no way the commission can make that deadline so it will have to be moved to December 8, 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Z. Band report • Dave has gotten three bands th agree to play, one of them being Robin Chalco's band. 3. Work sign-up sheet will be circulated The worksheet was Heuer circulated E. Upcoming School events - go around table There is a dance at SHS this Thursday sponsored by the senior class. LGHS is having their Homecoming dance. F. City Council meeting representative reports 1. Angel Cheng -11/1/95 2. Sydney Cohn -10/4/95 not much that pertained, mostly business 3. Schedule represer>tatives for next meetings 11115 will be Robin 8 Sean. 12/6 will be Sheeva G. Parks & Recreation Commission is requesting a recommendation from the Youth Commission regarding the creation of a seat on their commission for a high school student Does the commission think students would interested in the seat? The Parks 8 Recreation Department does Adopt-A-Park, horse trails, and maintains all the parks in the area. The main item occurring recently with their commission involves fuming vacant areas near Blue Hills and Kevin Moran into parks. Local residents in the areas are against it while AYSO and Little League desperately need the fields. The big problem with having a Youth Commissioner fill the position is the time commitment and having meetings on the same nights. However, most youth- commissioners agreed that having a youth fill the job would be an excellent idea. H. Fundraising Idea - Hurnan Race -- Beverly Tucker 1. May 11, 1995 2. Walk-a-thon sponsored by the Volunteer Exchange 3. Community groups are able to use the fund-raiser and can keep 75% of funds they raise for themselves . When groups raise over $?50, they may keep 95% of the funds. k was suggested that we perhaps asked the City Council for donations. We may be able get the t- shirth we wanted if we participate in this evert. 4. Need to appoint representative th research and sign-up commissioners Robin was assigned. I. Community Servicx Project Idea Source -- Beverly Tucker We may do Adopt-A-Park, go visit the elderly, help homeless youth. HOPE can also find additional Projects. H. Public Hearing on Youth Services Report -Brian Luskey 1. Report on items discussed and people in attendance at Town Hall meeting on Saturday, 14 October Brian was not present at the commission meeting. At the Town Hall meeting, they showed a video and ::~_ gave many great ideas about helping teens. What -~ was ironic was that many of these items were the exact items the council cut from the budget 2. Brainsbom~ people th invite to future meetings on same subject ASB J.
