HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 202 EESOLUTION NO. 202 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF T~E CITY OF SARATOGA EXPRESSING ITS STRONG OPPOSITION TO TaE SEL~,CTION OF A CAMPUS SITE AT FRUITVALE AND A!~.I.RNDALE IN TIM CITY OF SARATOGA BY T~ WEST VALLEY JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICT AND ~T,~ING LOCATION OF TEE CAMPUS AT A MORE CENTRAL SIIE IN T~E INTEREST OF MORE EFFICIENT EDUCATIONAL SERVICE TO TBE STUDJ~TS OF TI~E DISTRICT. WI{EREAS, after two public hearings and after receipt of a neSative recom- mendation from the Saratoga Plannins Commission, the City Council voted at its meeting of AuEust 19s 1964 to oppose the selection of the Fruitvale Avenue site in the City of Saratoga as one of the crampuses of the West Valley Junior College District, ~HEKE~S, the Mayor expressed the opposition of the City Planning Commission and the City Council to the selection of the Fruitvale Avenue site in a letter to the Board of Trustees of the West Velley Junior College District dated August 1~6~ and; ~HEREAS, the City Council of Saratoga supports the ~est Valley Junior College District itself and is concerned about the future success of the District~s pro- gram, and; ~EREAS~ continued contact by the citizens of Saratoga ~ith the ~e'mb~rs of the City Council has strongly reinforced the conviction of the City Council that a substantial majority of the residents of Saratoga are unalterably opposed to t~e location of a Junior College in Saratoga, and; ~EKEAS, the City Counci~ is convinced that the selection o~ the Fruitvale site would generate so much citizen opposition that it would result in defeat of the Dis~rict~s financir~ program, 8nd; WHEREAS, t~o other communities, namely~ the Cities of Campbell and Santa Clara, have officially urged that a Junior College Campus be locate~ ~ithin their boundaries~ ~F~EAS, location o~ the campus in Saratoga ~ould alienace ~ny o~ the voters in these neighboring cities ~ho ~oul~ like to have the cam~u~ ~n closer proxtmit~ ~o them, and; WHEREAS, there are more centrally located sites available ~htch ~ould pro- vide more economical and efficient service to the students of the district by virture of substantially reduced travel time and costs, and~ WHE~tEAS, development of these sites would not result in violation of the General Plan and disruption of the entire character of the community a~ would the development of the Fruitvale site in Saratoe, and~ ~{EP~AS, the City Council feels so strongly on this issue that, if the Fruitvale site is selecteds it would have to consider such preventive legal steps as are available to it; NOI.I, TItEPJEFORE~ BE 1T PalSOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA chat the selection of the Fruitvale Avenue site as a campus of the West Valley Junior College District is most emphatically opposed and the Board of Trustees of said District is hereby urgently recommended to select an alternate site or si~es for all of the reasons set out above.
