COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ~qAP~TOGA URGING COD.~PLETION OF ACQUISITION OF POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE ~1E~AS, the Point Reyes National Seashore is the only such facility. on the West Coast of the United States; and WHE~A~, although the Point Reyes National Seashore was authorized by the Congress of the United Stat~s in 1962, only 22,540 acres out of a total 53,480 acres have been acquired for park pu~oses to date; and I~EREAS, the present park o~ership within the boundary is hopelessly disjointed and inoperable as a park unit; and I.~HEREAB, the remaining private ].ands within the Park's authorized boun~tarv are unduly burdened by uncertain Federal intentions of future acquisition and by rising prices, ~nd also have been subject to constant tresnassing by park visitors; and WHE~AS, existing large privately o~ed parcels including s~e of the most valuable potential park land are in i~inent danger of being divided into s~ller o~merships and developed; and I~:tEREAS, the people of the United States have been promised the use of this great national resource, and its preservati~ is vital to present and future generations of Americans; and I~ERE~S, the present and potential recreational value of the Point Reves National Seashore may be best measured by the more than 600,000 visitors which visit the Seashore each year, NOW, THEREFOr., BE !T RE~OLVED that this City Council of the City of qaratoga, California, urges the President of the United States and the current administration to do eve~thing within their power to c~plete this acquisition project at the earliest possible opportunity. BE IT FURTHER RESOLveD that the Clerk of this city and ex-officio clerk of the City Council is hereby directed to send ~ertified copies of the within resolution to the Honorable Richard ~<, Nixon, President of the United States; the Honorable Ronald Reagan~ Governor of California; the Honorable !lalter J. Hickel~ Secre~ of the Interior; Mr. George B. Hartzog, Director of the National Park Sewice; Mr. Robert P. ~yo~ Director of the Bnreau of the Budget, and the C~lifo~ia C~gressional delegation.
