HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 654 RESOLUTION NO. 554 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA OPPOSING THE CLOSURE OF THE STATE HOSPITALS FOR THE MENTALLY ILL AND THE MENTALLY RETARDED WHEREAS, the State of California has adopted the policy of caring for the mentally ill and mentally retarded in local community programs and has started to implement this policy by the closing of state mental hospitals; and WHEREAS, such implementation has started before the effect of such a change is known; and WHEREAS, substitute facilities and services are not available in the communities; and WHEREAS, present research does not indicate any reduction in mentally retarded patients; and WHEREAS, for the above mentioned reasons this stated action. has and will result in serious impact upon the patients and the various communities to the detriment of both; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Saratoga that it hereby urges the Governor and the Legislature of the State of California to stop efforts to close state hospitals until pilot programs are conducted to determine impact of change; resulting feasibility as to actually implementing change and, if feasible, the method of transition which will cause the least detrimental effect to the full care of these patients. PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Saratoga on the 21st day of March , 19 73 .
