A RESOLUTION COM}~NDING CRAIG D. NORTHRUP
SARATOGA 1978 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
WHEREAS, the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce performs an annual,
intensive search to determine, from among an impressive list of outstanding
nominees, that one citizen to be selected as Saratoga Citizen of the Year;
and
WHEREAS, the Citizen of the Year award is accorded the individual
who exemplifies the spirit of selfless giving and is one who offers an
on-going committment of time, energy and activity in seeking to make this
a better community for all; and
WHEREAS, Craig Northrup, by distinguishing not only himself, but
also the City of Saratoga by bringing to it international acclaim, has
more than met the exacting tests for receipt of this honor; and
WHEREAS, Craig has served as Saratoga High School Band Director
since 1972, exhibiting tremendous dedication to his students, the Saratoga
Community, and the creation of an exemplary music program, highlighted
perhaps by the successful participation of the Saratoga High School
Symphonic Band in the 1974 International Music Festival held in Vienna,
Austria, and subsequently being selected as the most outstanding band
thereby winning the "Prize of Vienna," and now, in 1979, being asked to
return to Vienna with the Symphonic Band to represent the United States
at the Inauguration of the new United Nations International Office Center;
and
WHEREAS, Craig's influence on the community and his students
extends far beyond his talents as a published and versatile musician,
serving as a fine model for our young people to emulate, encouraging them
to participate in such civic activities as the Blossom Festival, the
Rotary Art Show, the Saratoga Parade, and Memorial Day Services at
Madronia Cemetery, playing also at nursing homes, the Palo Alto Veterans'
Hospital, football games, nursery school benefits, and many other community
events; and
WHEREAS, Craig has literally succeeded in making the Sound of
Music a vital component of the Saratoga environment;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City
of Saratoga does hereby extend its congratulations to Craig Northrup for
being named
"1978 SARATOGA CITIZEN OF THE YEAR"
and officially thanks him for his many fine contributions to the community
in the past and present and the involvements he will be undertaking in the
future.
The above and foregoing resolution was adopted by the City Council
of the City of Saratoga at a regular meeting held on the 6th day of June,
1979, by the following vote:
