A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
APPROVING THE COURSE ROUTE OF THE PAUL MASSON MARATHON AND
REQUESTING THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
APPROVE THE ROUTE AND ISSUE A PERMIT
WHEREAS, January 27, 1980 has been established as the date for
the annual Paul Masson Marathon and the site of the U.S. National
AAU Marathon Championship for 1980, sponsored by the Pacific Association
of the Amateur Athletics Union in cooperation with Paul Masson
Vineyards; and
WHEREAS, certain limitations on distances and elevations must
be met so that the race will meet the international standards of the
Olympic Committee; and
WHEREAS, a great amount of participatory interest not only
nationally, but internationally, has been affirmed; and
WHEREAS, as a result it is anticipated that the event will draw
approximately 3,000 runners; and
WHEREAS, such an event requires a great amount of preparation
in the area of traffic control as well as the exacting dimensions of
the course; and
WHEREAS, much of the course will be run on the streets of Saratoga,
and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office under contract with Saratoga
will control traffic and detour points where necessary; and
WHEREAS, two of these streets are designated State highways
therefore requires State approval;
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Saratoga hereby
approves the course route and request the California Department of
Transportation approve the reduction of Saratoga-Los Gatos Road
(Highway 9) northbound to one (1) lane between Austin Way and
Fruitvale Avenue from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and
the use of Saratoga-Los Gatos Road (Highway 9) from Fruitvale Avenue
to Saratoga Avenue on which traffic will be conveyed through from
from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the reduction of
Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road (Highway 85) to one (1) lane northbound from
Saratoga Avenue to Prospect Road from approximately 9:00 a.m. to
12:00 noon and issue an encroachment permit.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of
the City of Saratoga this 16th day of January , 1980, by
the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen Kraus, Corr, Matteoni and Callon
