RESOLUTION NO. 991
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA REGARDING PURCHASE
OF LOCALLY GROWN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS
WHEREAS, the program to eradicate the Mediterranean Fruit Fly has restricted
the shipment of fruit from Santa Clara County; and
WHEREAS, the County's twenty-three million dollar a year agriculture industry
faces a real crisis this year due to the quarentine; and
~HEREAS, certain crops may be officially or unofficially embargoed by other parts
of the nation or world; and
..
WHEREAS, this will cause a reduced market for products grown in Santa Clara County;
and
WHEREAS, the process for clearing certain crops for shipment outside the County
area will shorten the shelf life of the product so that buyers may refuse to accept
these products; and
WHEREAS, it is our responsibility to help protect California's agricultural
industry and the resulting economy;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Saratoga City Council supports efforts to
market local crop locally, through existing retail food stores; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Saratoga City Counci I encourages residents to ask
for and purchase locally grown products; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Saratoga City Counei I urges all retai I stores in the
County to support the program by purchasing locally grown agricultural products to help
prevent economic disaster for area farmers.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted by the City Council of
the City of Saratoga at a regular meeting held on the 4th day of February, 1981, by the
