HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Resolution 2312 RESOLUTION NO. 2312 DESIGNATING WCMEN ' S HISTORY WHEREAS, women of every race, class and ethnic background helped develop the City of Saratoga in countless recorded and unrecorded ways as servants, nurses, nuns, homemakers, industrial workers, teachers, reformers, soldiers and pioneers, and WH]~, women have played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of our City's life by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in and outside of the home, and WHEREAS, women have played a unique role throughout our history by providing the majority of the City's volunteer labor force and have been particularly important in the establishment of early charitable philanthropic and cultural institutions in the City, and WHEREAS, women of every race, class and ethnic background served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement, not only to secure their own right of suffrage and equal opportunty, but have been and continue to be outstanding in the legal system, as leaders in the educational field, in their participation in the political arena, in the development of the high-tech industry, as agriculturists and vintners, as winners in competitive athletics, as leaders in the labor union movement, in the civil rights movement, and in thepeacemovement, and WI~, despite these contributions, the role of women has been consistently overlooked and undervalued. NOW, THERE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the week of March 2-8, 1986, be designated "Women's History Wee~'and that the people of the City of Saratoga join with the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women in observing and celebrating such week with appropriate ceremonies and activities in their schools, churches, places of work, and libraries. The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Saratoga held on the 19th day of February, 1986, by the following vote: AYES: Councihnenbers Callon, Fanelli, Hlava, Moyles and Mayor Clevenger NDES: None ABSENT: None ATTEST: Deputy 'City Clerk
